Opportunity for Isle of Man Year 12 students to win ManSat scholarships to 2023 United Space School

Year 12 students have the chance to represent the Isle of Man at the 2023 United Space School (USS) in Houston, Texas.

Scholarships to the USS have been awarded annually by the ManSat Group since 2000, with the most recent recipients being Castle Rushen High School students Daniel Millward and Michael Behrman, and Chalse Cowin from King William’s College.

The USS is run by the Foundation for International Space Education (FISE) and the students are tasked with planning a crewed mission to Mars, working alongside peers from more than 20 countries with support from NASA astronauts, engineers, and scientists. The 2023 USS will take place from July 16-31 with ManSat awarding up to three scholarships.

To enter the competition

Year 12 students need to submit written answers to these three questions:

  1. Why are you interested in space?

  2. How do you think the Isle of Man can contribute to space exploration?

  3. How can space exploration mitigate climate change?

The answer to each question should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length – quality is better than quantity – and all three questions must be answered. Answers should be submitted in a single PDF file, by email. The file should be named using the following convention: firstname-secondname-school.pdf Entries will be anonymised before judging takes place.

The deadline for entries is 11.59pm on Friday, 13 January 2023, and late entries will not be accepted. The winners will be announced by Thursday, 19 January 2023.

The scholarships to attend the USS are awarded in cooperation with the Department of Education, Sport and Culture (DESC).

ManSat’s Chief Technical Officer Dr Jennifer Stone, who was the first ever recipient of a ManSat scholarship to the USS, said:

“The stories we hear each year from our scholarship winners reinforce what an incredible opportunity this is for Isle of Man students. They develop life-long friendships, make important contacts within the space industry, and our Isle of Man students are regularly top of the class, which is testament to the Island’s high schools, King William’s College and DESC. “We are excited to read the competition submissions – from personal experience, I know what an amazing adventure awaits the winners.”
